Mississippi flag redesign

Postby benjaminrex1 » 24 Jun 2015 22:05

Recent news about possible re-design of Mississippi flag. This was attempted once before, I believe, in 2001, but the design was not approved by the voters.

This was the design that was voted down, I think:

Can anyone on here do better?

Mississippi's previous flag, used in the 19th century, looked like this:

What about replacing the Confederate flag with the magnolia tree from the former flag, considering the magnolia is still the official state flower and tree of Mississippi?

I don't know how appropriate the magnolia tree is for a Mississippi state flag, though it is certainly a more distinctive charge than a set of stars.

For comparison, this is Mississippi's current flag:

Trouble is, the tree symbol was adopted as the flag of the state when it seceded from the union. Thus, it is associated with the slave owning secessionists, and unlikely to be acceptable to African Americans, at least.

Less so than the Confederate flag, probably. Though would an image of the magnolia flower, like e.g. Philip Tibbetts' flag and several others at the Vexillology Wiki page, be less controversial?
