US Army flag

Postby davidarowe » 26 Oct 2011 18:38

Why is the Army flag the only Armed Services flag that doesn't have an eagle on it?

Well the devise of the US Army Flag (created in 1956, the US Army then beeing the only US Armed Service without a Flag representing the Service as a whole) is the old War Office Seal created in 1778. And the designers at that time didn't choose to include the Eagle, perhaps they tought the Emblem had enought figures in it, to also include an Eagle would just make it to much.

From Wikipedia the Flag as it was unfurled on 14 June 1956.

Oh yeah, lets put a picture of a 2 flags on our flag. That'll be cool! Cause two is, like, better than one. Oh, and we can put more stuff too, cause symbols are ALWAYS better when they're indecipherably complex.

Marcus, this is incorrect. The U.S. Navy had no service-wide flag until 1959, and the Coast Guard's was unofficial until 1962.

The designers in 1778 didn't choose to include the eagle because the eagle was not yet a U.S. symbol. The eagles in the other service flags are all derived from the supporter in the U.S. coat of arms, which was not adopted by Congress until four years after the War Office/Department of the Army seal was designed.

Ok, then my source was incorrect thanks for setting it rigth Joe.

Well then it was not so strange that the Eagle was not included in 1778.

Markus: to be clear, the eagle was not a U.S. symbol until the national seal and coat of arms were adopted in 1782. The War Office seal, which is now the Department of the Army seal, from which the device on the flag was taken, was adopted in 1778. There's nothing strange about it.
