Civil War Union flags.

Postby timthehun » 09 Jun 2011 02:04

I was wondering if anyone had any examples of Union battle flags from the Civil War. Seems to be tons of confederate ones out there, but few Union ones. In particular I'd really like to know if either Grant or Sherman had there own battle flag.

Federal regiments each carried a National Color, with the unit's designation lettered on one of the red stripes. Most also added battle honors as they occurred (names of battles, also lettered onto the stripes. Most Volunteer regiments also carried a State Color: being the State flag, likewise inscribed with unit name, and often battle honors as well. A few Volunteer units replaced the State Color with a special flag of their own (the famous green flags of the Irish Brigade regiments, for instance).

Also see these three pages on Historical Flags of Our Ancestors. They offer a good sampling.

1. Flags of the American Civil War -
2. Chart of Northern Regimental and Unit Flags -
3. The Irish Regiments of the North -
