Landespolizei flag in use by the Wehrmacht

Postby Marcus Wendel on 07 Mar 2008 21:30

The Prussian Landespolizei flag displayed at FOTW with the description "Banner of the Protection Police of Prussia" was not only used by Polizei (Police) units but also by Heer (Army) and Luftwaffe (Air Force) units formed when Landespolizei battalions were transferred to the Wehrmacht (Armed Forces) as whole units, for example the I Battalion of Infanterie-Regiment 77 (26. Infanterie-Division) or two battalions of Regiment General Göring (later I. / Fallschirmjäger Regiment 1).

See attached image of I. / Fallschirmjäger Regiment 1 of the Luftwaffe displaying the Landespolizei banner from "Hermman Göring: From Regiment to Fallschirmpanzerkorps" by Roger James Bender & George A. Petersen.

From the book Flags of the Third Reich 1: Wehrmacht by Brian L Davis & Malcolm McGregor:

Obverse of the colour of the I Bn, Regiment General Göring. Below the Colonial Police Emblem as the Regiment while Landespolizeigruppe General Göring it was bestowed the Traditions of the German East African Police Troop. The Emblem was kept when the traditions was transferred to the Berlin Protection Police.

Reverse of Colour of the II and III Bns Regiment General Göring plus the I Bn, Parachute Regiment No. 1 (formerly IV (Parachute Rifle) Bn, Regiment General Göring). Note that these Colours had the Police Finial shown for the I Bn Colour substituted by the Luftwaffe Eagle Finial.

Interesting, in the "Hermann Göring" book mentioned above this is written about that emblem:
It is believed, however, that the "Southern Cross" emblem was removed from the I. Batallion standard when authority to wear it was officially delegated to the mounted detachment of the Berlin Schutzpolizei in late 1938.

Yes the Davis' Book stated that the emblem was left on the colours when the tradition was transferred. So there is a contradiction as to the faith of the Emblem.
