These designs aren't radical, it's only the case that the original were too "conservative" - an euphemism to "immensely uncreative". The flags are too boring and and undistinctive between them, similarly to American case:

No, in this point Australian state flags situation is even worse than American counterpart, in percentage. At second image, you may notice that "radical" departures may be some of the best designs.

P.S. Most of the designs there are hugely based on state heraldry and official insignia, so they aren't "radical" anyway.
